10 THINGS THAT GO THROUGH A NEW MOM’S HEAD
Every mom can relate to this article. Here is a list of 10 things that go through a new mom’s head.Having a baby is a unique experience for a new mom and there are a lot of thoughts and feelings that she would have.
After the months of preparation and the excitement of birth, there are new situations and challenges to face.
“Wow! Is this tiny bundle all mine? Are my husband and I responsible for bringing him into this world? Yes, indeed! He has both your DNA and he is all yours – to love, cherish, care for and to enjoy seeing him as he goes through all his growth stages.
“How tiny he is!” Yes, do look closely at him and wonder at how perfectly his little fingers and toes, his eyes, ears –every part of his body is formed.
“Will I cope?”—It is seemingly a daunting and overwhelming load of work and you’re probably feeling tired before you’ve begun! But slowly, a little at a time as you get on with the task of caring for the baby and the family, things will fall into place, and you’ll be on top.
Feeling disoriented, isolated and lonely: You may be suffering from ‘baby blues’ and your husband may be feeling inadequate if he’s unable to help because he’s at work. Don’t worry; you’ll both begin to adjust to the new situation, but if negative feelings persist, talk to your doctor or your parents.
“Why don’t I have motherly feelings as yet for my baby—why do I feel so detached?” If you are left alone with your baby initially without interference, you can bond instantly with him. If for some reason, you didn’t get this time, ask for it. But don’t fret about it. You might both just feel utterly exhausted. Holding your baby close to your chest also helps in bonding.
“Why is the baby crying so much?” Your baby will cry more:
• If you had a general anesthetic during labor.
• If he was born after a long delivery.
• If he had a forceps delivery.
• Boys may cry more than girls in new situations.
Give your baby attention—your presence gives him comfort. Respond to his crying and attend to his needs promptly—feeding, changing, cuddling etc. Your love, affection and attention will have a calming effect.
“If I fall asleep, my baby might fall off the bed” Not likely as your baby is not able to turn over on his side as yet. But as he grows and begins to turn over, there might be a possibility. As a preventive measure, mothers make a wall of pillows.
“If I fall asleep, I might roll over on the baby” Put your baby in a baby cot next to your bed. You can still attend to his needs.
“I have a cold. My baby might catch it if I breast –feed” Doctors say that breast milk releases antibodies that prevent infection.
“Sometimes, I feel that having a baby creates house-hold chaos”—these feelings are understandable. As you slowly begin to organize your life and develop a pattern—get as much help as possible. Get a domestic help to clean, wash etc. Ask your husband to take turns at looking after the baby, while you do other chores, or rest.
“ I wish the baby would grow out of this stage quickly”—this may not happen as quickly as you’d like –but he will grow and develop. Each stage will have its own joys and challenges. The rewards are worth waiting for.
