5 healthy tips to lose weight after having a baby
Presumably, you’ll be consulting your gynaecologist throughout your pregnancy; she or he will guide you- so you can ask for specific exercises to be done after pregnancy. There are also excellent books available; one of these is a book on fitness by Dr. Shelly Batra called “20 minutes to fitness”. It has a whole section with exercises that could be done during and after pregnancy.
EXERCISE
This is necessary before, during and after pregnancy. It ensures that there are no unnecessary deposits of fat; it also helps in smoother delivery of the baby.
If there are no medical complications most women can exercise regularly during pregnancy.
If you’ve had a Caesarean, wait for ten to twelve weeks before starting to exercise; and if you’ve had a normal delivery you’ll need to wait for four to six weeks. Doctors differ about this, so do consult your gynaecologist. You’ll also need to wait for any tear or episiotomy to heal as well. Recovery time after delivery is dependent on your fitness. If you have exercised during pregnancy, you will recover much faster.
When your doctor gives the green signal, start exercising again – but begin slowly because your body has just begun to recover from a major trauma. But once you begin be regular in your workouts. You do not need to do it all in one go. Ten minutes at a time is good going. Walking is one of the best exercises.
DIET
Along with exercise, it is essential to eat well. Have plenty of fruit and vegetables along with staples like grains and proteins. Eat little and often. Avoid strict dieting, chocolates and sweet biscuits.
DRINK
Drink plenty of fluids, especially water. The recommended amount is at least 8 glasses daily.
REST
Sufficient rest also helps to prevent obesity. Cat nap during the day if possible gets help with the night feeds.
BINDING
In the old days, mid wives would bind the stomach with cloth after delivery to reduce the bloating. Whether this is allowed or not by doctors is something you’ll need to find out. If your gynaecologist does not recommend it, then don’t do it. There must be a good reason for him/her to believe so.
These are a few tips to help reduce weight; but easy to do. Take it slowly and then resume your pre-pregnancy regime.
Make sure you abstain from tobacco and alcohol.
