“A moment in baby’s tummy……a lifetime in mother’s heart”
Babies can really give you feeding blues when they refuse to eat constantly.
But, remember that all babies are meant to be fed and nurtured and they will eventually learn to do it.
If you take the below mentioned tips into consideration, then you could surely chuck off this whole phase of baby not eating very soon.
In this post, we will explore some really helpful tips to get your baby liking the food.
Baby Diet: 5 Tips to get your Baby to Eat
1. Increase physical activity
The other sure shot way of dealing with it is to increase the physical activity of your child by getting involved personally.
Make her dance to her favorite melodious rhymes or make her run around chasing a toy, play hide and seek or take her to the park.
This will automatically exhaust your baby’s energy reserves and she would feel hungry sooner.
2. Increase the feed time
Feeding your baby every two hours is fine until six months i.e till when the baby is on breast milk.
After that, you should try to maintain this time gap till when your baby is eating properly.
If your baby is not eating well then try extending this time to two and half or three hours or may be up to four hours as per the need of the situation.
Generally, in this time gap the hunger really builds up and of course your baby will eat well after a long gap.
3. Massage at least twice in fixed timings
Massaging the baby well followed by a warm water bath kicks up the hunger level in the babies.
It is a well tested and tried trick.
Massaging twice in a day is must for babies for at least 18 moths or as long as you can continue it.
Massage boosts up the muscle strength and blood circulation and also builds up a good amount of hunger in the baby.
It is advisable to fix up the timings of the massage which will help you to set a routine for your baby.
Then, you would know his feed timings as well making it much easier for you too.
Babies are born with sufficient iron reserves which could last up to six months.
Still, your doctor may advise to give iron and Vitamin D supplements to your child.
Since Breast milk is a poor source of Vitamin D, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that babies must be given Vitamin supplements starting in the first few days of life. ( See Complete Vitamin Chart)
These supplements help in building hunger in the child.
5. Try different recipes
One of the reasons, why your baby might not be eating well could be the kind of food offered to her.
She might not like the food itself, the texture of the food or the presentation.
Try giving her different recipes like slightly sweet tangy tomato soup which is an all time favorite of babies.
Mashed banana, mashed potato or porridge (both sweet and salted) or something on the similar lines should be tried with babies who are fussy with food.
Basically you need to identify the prominent taste preference of your baby which is generally sweet.
Sometimes, baby has salt preference over sweet.
So first figure out which is the prominent taste preference for your baby.
Then, you need to work on the texture of the food and different recipes.
The traditional tricks might not work all the time.
The best way is – BABY LED WEANING: Your baby will eat by himself.
Hope this will help you in figuring the right way to increase the hunger in your baby.
One thing that I can assure you is that it is a very short temporary phase which will go away very soon.
