One of the most difficult tasks of having a newborn baby is getting him/her to sleep through the night. Babies don’t have any particular sleep routine, especially for the first three months. The time of the day does not matter. Sometimes, they even fall asleep during nursing. Babies do not understand the difference between night and day. As a result, they sleep whenever they are tired and sleepy.
Get your baby into a routine
In order to overcome sleepless nights, you have to make your baby follow a routine. You have to follow the same process every night so that your baby gets used to it. For instance, just before putting your baby to sleep, you can give him/her a nice warm bath. Baths help relax babies. After bathing your baby, you could feed him/her and then sing a lullaby or play some soft music and put your baby to sleep.
Make sure that your baby doesn’t sleep too much during the day. If your baby sleeps for long during the day, he/she will be more active at night. It is absolutely correct that babies need a lot of sleep. However, as they grow up, they need to understand the difference between night and day. Play with your baby just before sleeping at night. This tires the child and helps him/her sleep for a longer period of time without waking up. If your baby wakes up for a feed in the middle of the night, don’t talk much. Even if you do, talk in a calm voice and ensure that your baby goes back to sleep after the feed. Make sure that your baby goes to bed with a full stomach. If not, it is more likely that he/she will wake up many times during the night.
Avoid blue lights during night. The wavelength emitted from blue lights and white LED’s disrupts sleep. Dim red lights are the best. They are the least disruptive to circadian rhythms (also known as the human biological clock). Before your baby was born, everything inside the mother’s womb looked red for him/her. As a result, red light also gives babies a feeling of safety and helps them sleep better.
Sleep in the same place
It’s very important that you put your baby to sleep in the same place every night. Gradually your baby will start to recognize this place and associate it with sleeping. You could also use the same blanket to cover your baby every night while you put him/her to sleep.
