Millions of women log on to Google every day to learn about the measures to avoid pregnancy. Getting pregnant is always a well-planned and well-thought decision and it brings in major permanent changes in our lives.
A lot goes into making a family and you have to stretch yourself in all spheres of life to bring up a baby. Nevertheless, specific birth control measures will help you in a big way in avoiding pregnancy.
Here, is what you need to do:
Daily Combination Pills: Contain Oestrogen and progestin that hampers reproductivity. These hormones are synthetic in nature but are produced naturally by your ovaries too.
Daily Minipills: Comprise of only progestin
Skin Patches: These patches are commonly worn for 21 days. Then, you need to remove them for 7 days and wear a new patch.
Vaginal Rings: Same as skin patches these are worn continuously for 21 days and removed for 7 days.
Intra-Uterine Devices: These are planted inside the uterus and last for 3 to 10 years.
The precautions to be kept in mind are:
- The pills should be taken at the same time every day. Taking it before or after can make it ineffective.
- Don’t miss your pills. Take them immediately once you remember your missed pill.
- Do replace the skin patches and rings on time else you are not protected against pregnancy.
Consider using Barrier protection
Using condoms can be helpful in ensuring double protection with contraceptive pills. Condoms alone can also check pregnancy to a great extent. What more! It is the only way to stay away from STD’s (Sexually Transmitted Diseases).
But, be careful not to use male & female condoms together. Either of you should use it as per your preference.
Track your fertility
Usually from 10th day to 22nd day of your menstrual cycle is the ovulation period. This is if your menstrual cycle is of 28 days which is generally the case. If your cycle is of lesser or more days, then you may consult a gynaecologist to track your ovulation period.
Alternatively, you may use apps like Glow to track your ovulation period. During the ovulation period, the couple must abstain from having sex. This is a natural way to prevent pregnancy.
Hormonal EC pills
It is helpful in using emergency contraception. You can use it in five days after having intercourse. But, it is considered to be the most effective when used within the first 72 hours.
You can get it for free if you are insured. It is a part of a preventive care program that is run by the government.
Emergency IUD contraception
You can get copper-T inserted within 5 days of having sex. Copper-T can also be planned in case you are sure that you don’t want to have babies for another 3 to 10 years. These IUD’s are very effective and give you a carefree sexual life with your partner.
There are many copper-T’s available these days. You can visit a nearby health clinic or can see your doctor to know more about the same.
Permanent contraceptive fixture
If you are clear that you are done with having kids or don’t want to have any then operation is one of the best options. Women can go in for surgical blocking of fallopian tubes and men can go for procedures to check ejaculation.
These procedures are irreversible and advised only when you are sure that you don’t want to have any more kids.
The contraceptive failures can happen to anyone and everyone. In case of missed periods, take the pregnancy test after the first day of the missed period. In case your periods are irregular, then take the pregnancy test after three weeks of missed periods.
Pregnancy may happen to anyone at any time. You must not panic at all instead see your doctor as soon as possible. As they say, everything in life has its pros and corns and so is this sexually active life that comes with the fear of getting pregnant.
If you don’t want to get pregnant, which by the way is the right decision in case you are not prepared, then, be particular about accurately using the proper contraception.
