With the recent outbreak of Coronavirus or Covid-19, the entire world is in chaos. Notably, parents are increasingly becoming concerned about how to protect their kids against this contagious outbreak.
Based on the available evidence to date, it is seen that Coronavirus is affecting adults more than kids. Though some kids have been affected by Coronavirus, yet it is mostly the adults who are getting affected.
WHO has declared COVID – 19 to be pandemic. Strict health guidelines have been issued to follow social isolation not to catch this disease.
The situation is tricky, with an increasing number of COVID patients getting reported every day in India. Though schools and colleges have been shut, and corporates are allowing their employees to work from home, yet, the disease has not curbed down entirely.
So, here is what you can do to protect your kids against this contagious outbreak.
How to protect my child from COVID – 19 infections?
As they say, ‘Prevention is better than cure!’ As parents, you need to follow the same precautions that everyone else has been asked to follow:
The children must be made to stay indoors. The kids should also be kept in social isolation with their families and should not step out to crowded places at all.
Eating out should be strictly stopped. And, let the kids enjoy home-cooked food only till this pandemic infection curbs down.
Avoid contact with anyone coughing
The child should not be allowed to mingle with anybody who is coughing or sneezing. Be it a family member, maid, or a friend, a strict measure should be taken to keep the child away.
Disinfect your homes regularly with various alcohol-based disinfectants that are readily available in the market. All the tabletops, doors, switches, floors, remotes, phones, laptops, chairs, door handles, and toilets should be regularly disinfected.
No tutions or extracurricular classes
Please refrain your child from joining any extra classes like drawing, sports, or any other classes. Your child is the safest in your company. You need to go the extra mile to engage your kids happily at home this summer.
Work From Home
As adults, we must refrain from going out as much as possible. We must resort to working from home option knowing that it will not just work in our favour but in favour of our entire family. Moreover, avoid going to crowded shops for buying daily needs, and always wear a mask when you step outside. Please don’t take your kids with you to anywhere.
Consider not taking the newspaper delivery for a few days. You can read the news online or can watch minute to minute updates on television.
Wash and disinfect articles brought from outside
Wash the milk packets nicely before opening them. Any courier received, must be thoroughly wiped with Dettol before letting it in.
Don’t allow the kids to order food from outside
As COVID 19 is declared a pandemic, extra precautions need to be taken. For a few weeks, please don’t allow kids to order food from Swiggy, Zomato, or any other delivery service. Serve them only home-cooked fresh food.
Disinfect the doorbell
Keep disinfecting the main door and doorbell every morning and evening. Visitors often touch the doorbell, so it needs to be disinfected for safety.
Wash hands often
The kids must be made to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water. Let the kids run the soap nicely in between the fingers, on the nails, on the fingertips, on palms, and on the back of the hands properly and thoroughly massage it.
Please don’t allow kids to put hands in their mouth unnecessarily, or to touch their nose, eyes, or ears often.
Make sure to keep one sanitiser in every room so that kids can use it often.
Instruct maids to wash their hands soon after entering the house thoroughly.
Don’t go to gyms, swimming pools, parks in your society
Please don’t let kids visit gyms, swimming pools, or parks in your society. You must strictly keep them in social isolation.
Wash and change after coming back home
Always wash your face, feet, and hands thoroughly after you are back from work. Change your clothes immediately.
Add disinfectant to your clothes
Add disinfectant to your clothes and set them to a suitable heat treatment while washing them to stay safe.
Wash vegetables and fruits nicely
Thoroughly wash all the fruits and vegetables with warm water before consuming them in any form.
How to raise the immunity of kids to prevent them from catching COVID – 19 infection?
One of the interesting facts to note here is that amidst all the chaos and fear, there are people in China who successfully survived without contracting infection when it was an outbreak.
In Wuhan city of China, thousands were the victim of Covid-19 infection, but there were other lakhs of people who could stay safe. Also, to date, 84,000 people who caught the infection have fully recovered from it and are back to their normal lives.
This data goes on to prove the fact that your immunity plays a key role in keeping you safe from the infection. The same holds true for small kids.
So, let us learn about a few things that can raise our kids’ immunity immensely:
1. Warm Water: Let your child drink ample warm water throughout the day. Any infection is first contracted at the first line of defence, which is throat. When anyone drinks warm water, the infection is carried to the stomach instead of passing to the lungs. The acidic juices in the stomach are strong enough to kill the harmful infections of any sort.
2.Honey, ginger, turmeric, and tulsi: Prepare a hot beverage of ginger, turmeric, tulsi, and honey and feed this to your kids every morning and evening.
Ginger has a strong antioxidant property and anti-inflammatory in nature. It kills plenty of viruses and boosts immunity.
Honey is anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and is rich in anti-oxidants. A spoonful of honey must be given every morning and evening to all the kids.
Turmeric contains curcumin, which contains healing properties. Turmeric is anti-inflammatory in nature. It is also antiseptic and kills the infections.
Tulsi is exceptionally effective in cough, cold, and viral infections. Tulsi is rich in antioxidants and contains micronutrients, which gives it healing properties and treats most of the infections.
After knowing the immense benefits offered by these four ingredients, would you not want to give it to your kids to boost their immunity naturally?
For making this beverage, just heat some water in a pan. Add grated ginger, turmeric, 3 to 4 tulsi leaves to it, and let it boil for a few minutes to extract all goodness of these ingredients in water.
Strain this beverage and allow it to cool for it to be drinkable. Add a teaspoon full of honey to half a glass of the beverage and make your child drink this every morning and evening. It will boost your child’s immunity to a great extent.
3. Making kids do Pranayam: This is indeed one of the most important exercises to increase the immunity of kids. Make them do anulom-vilom pranayam, brahmari pranayam and kapalbhati pranayam. When you do these exercises, the lungs expand and contract, making them stronger and boosting your immune system to a great extent.
4. Ensure your child has a proper sleep: Let your child have a long peaceful nap of 10 to 12 hours every day. When the kids sleep, there is increased blood supply to muscles and tissues, which repair the damaged cells and tissues naturally. The child’s body also releases growth hormone, which helps in the growth and development of your child.
5. Eat healthy home-cooked food: Everything that is cooked by a mother or a grandmother comes with a lot of love and affection. Make sure to cook at least two dishes every day for your kids to nurture them with love, care, and nutrition.
Are the symptoms of Coronavirus different in children than in adults?
No, the symptoms of Coronavirus infection are the same in both children as well as adults. However, the good news is that the children are displaying only mild symptoms.
The symptoms include:
Runny nose or cold
Sore throat and pain
One of the major reasons why this infection not detected early is that its symptoms are the same as regular flu, cold, and cough. So, who would ever think that they are infected with COVID – 19 rather than regular infection.
But, as I said earlier, ‘Prevention is better than cure’. It is extremely important to take extra precautions to stay safe.
Studies, exams, tests, extra-curricular activities, tuitions can all wait. There is nothing more important than your child’s safety. So, please don’t allow your kids to step out for anything. Let them be on house arrest and let them enjoy watching movies, practice yoga, play indoor games, do some do-it-yourself craft activities, engage in painting or drawing, read stories, and study.
It is important not to allow kids to play outdoors with other kids. As this is how this pandemic infection has been spreading through physical proximity and contact.
Another good news is that China, which is the root cause of COVID-19, has been able to control this infection. Fortunately, no new COVID-19 case has been reported in China since yesterday that is 19th March 2020. This has shown a new hope to the world, and hopefully, COVID 19 will bid farewell soon.
India has been reported with 184 positive cases to date. There have been only 4 deaths in India due to Covid 19. With the above-mentioned measures, we will be able to keep ourselves and our kids safe and protected.
