Becoming a new dad can be quite a daunting task, but there are a few things to keep in mind that will help you, your new born baby and make your marriage stronger.
Daddy-Baby Bonding
The concept of daddy-baby bonding was totally unheard of in the past. It was taken for granted that bonding with the new born was something that involved only the mother .However, research shows that spending quality time with a dad is equally important for a baby’s development and wellbeing. The time spent bonding with your baby- like checking the diaper, giving an oil massage or bathing, getting him/her dressed, even feeding or burping him/her, reading or singing a lullaby or – simply making him/her smile and laugh will play a big role in the relationship you will share with him/her later. Make sure you enjoy these precious moments so that you can create fond memories of the quality time you spent with your new born.
It gets easier
The first couple of months are the most difficult , especially when the baby wants to be carried or fed at odd hours of the night and you often end up looking haggard and tired. Don’t worry, it is just a matter of time before they get used to a regular sleeping pattern.
Postpartum depression
Postpartum depression and baby blues ,which is the effect of hormonal imbalance due to pregnancy and child birth, is the most common problem after delivery. During the first three months after the delivery, it is important to spend quality time with your wife as she needs all your love, support, attention, nutrition and rest to get back to normalcy both physically and psychologically.
Time Management
A new born can literally take over your life and bring about drastic changes in your lifestyle and routine as he/she depends on you for everything. Give yourself adequate time to grow into the role of parenting.
Parenting workshops
Attend parenting talks held by child psychologists to gain knowledge and techniques on how to be a better dad . A good paediatrician can also help you get rid of your nagging apprehensions and doubts.
Most parents of newborns go through a gamut of emotions- feelings of doubts, apprehensions and insecurities . Don’t worry, all your apprehensions will disappear the moment your baby recognizes you for the first time, or utters his/her first word “dada”.The joy, happiness and laughter that your first baby brings into your life is beyond measure.
